The Boston marathon is scheduled for April 21, 2025, and it aligns with Patriots' Day, a Massachusetts state holiday honouring the first battles of the American Revolutionary War.

The marathon's route from Hopkinton to Boylston Street in Boston remains unchanged. The race begins from the main street in Hopkinton through Ashland, Framingham, Natick and Wellesley, until the end in Boston.

The course offers the runners an opportunity to traverse a path steeped in both athletic and national heritage.

In 2013, a huge setback faced the Boston Marathon as there was a bombing that occurred. It was an Islamist domestic terrorist attack that took place during the 117th edition of the race. Three people were killed while more than 260 were badly hurt.

Without a doubt, the 2025 Boston Marathon has assembled a strong field of athletes to battle for top honours.

The women’s field will see Hellen Obiri hoping to defend her title after winning the 2023 and 2024 editions of the marathon.

She will face off against strong opponents, including the Ethiopian duo of Amane Beriso and Yalemzerf Yehualaw. The Kenyan trio of Irine Cheptai, Sharon Lokedi and Edna Kiplagat will also be in the mix to challenge Hellen Obiri.

The men’s race will see Sisay Lemma making a comeback to defend his title, and he will be up against Chicago Marathon champion John Korir, two-time Boston Marathon champion Evans Chebet, CyBrian Kotut and Daniel Mateiko. Their participation promises an exciting and competitive race.

Boston Marathon: Prize money

According to the Boston Marathon organisers, the winners of the race in the open division will walk away with $150,000 (Ksh 19,445,250).

Those who finish second and third have a chance of pocketing $75,000 (Ksh 9,722,625) and $40,000 (Ksh 5,185,400), with those who cross the finish line fourth, fifth and sixth bagging $25,000 (Ksh 3.2 million), $18,000 (Ksh 2.3 million), and $13,500 (Ksh 1.7 million).

The athletes who finish seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th will be awarded $10,500 (Ksh 1.3 million), $8500 (Ksh 1.1 million), $7000 (Ksh 907,445) and $5500 (Ksh 712,993).

Boston Marathon: Charitable Impact and Opportunities

Aside from the competition, the Boston Marathon also serves as a significant fundraising platform through runners and well-wishers.

Runners can gain entry by committing to raise funds for official charities, with minimum amounts typically starting at $4,500.

The initiative by the Boston Marathon Organisers has led to substantial contributions to various causes. It has also reinforced the marathon's role in promoting social good alongside athletic excellence.

Boston Marathon: Qualification Standards

Another outstanding aspect about the Boston Marathon is the stringent qualification standards. For instance, in the 2025 edition of the race, more than 13,000 applicants were declined.

This is because they failed to meet the strict qualifying times, which vary by age and gender. For example, men aged 18-34 must complete a marathon in under 3 hours, while women in the same age group must finish in under 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Another challenge is getting a bib for the amateur runners. According to the race organisers, there are only two ways to get a bib.

One, a runner can pay for the whole package, which includes travel, accommodation, and a bib, but it is quite pricy. The other option is fundraising for one of the 27 organisations approved by the Boston Athletic Association, which is more expensive.

The 2025 Boston Marathon is shaping up to be a historic and unmissable event. As it commemorates 250 years of Patriots' Day and hosts one of the strongest athlete fields, the race promises thrilling performances and a continued legacy of excellence.
