The AFN has picked a new training camp venue ahead of the African U18 and U20 Championships in Zambia.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has moved the training camp of the National U18 and U20 athletes from Abuja to Asaba, in the final preparations for the African U18 and U20 Championships in Ndola, Zambia.

Pulse Sports reported earlier that The AFN had invited over 50 athletes to the camp in Abuja ahead of the championships, set to take place from April 29th - May 3rd.

The Technical Director of the Federation, Samuel Onikeku, said in a statement that the shifting of the venue from the High-Performance Centre in Abuja to Asaba is to enable the athletes to train with the best equipment used at the 21st National Sports Festival held just last December in Delta State.

''The AFN is desirous of giving the athletes the best of preparations hence the decision to move them to Asaba where they will have the opportunity of training with the latest equipment without distraction,'' Onikeku said.

"The invited athletes are now to arrive in Asaba from Wednesday, April 12 to begin preparations for the Championship, which has helped to produce some of the household names in Nigerian track and field today," he concluded.

Over 55 athletes were invited to the camp, mostly selected from the AFN U18 and U20 trials held at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna last month.

They are top contenders for medals at the age-group continental championship and will be gunning to improve the third-place finish Nigeria had behind South Africa and Kenya at the last edition in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Nigeria won 13 gold, 6 silver, and 13 bronze medals.
