Akani Simbine opened his season with a standout performance at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, edging past a long-standing mark previously held by Usain Bolt.

Following his impressive run at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, Akani Simbine not only set a world-leading time but also dethroned Usain Bolt.

Akani Simbine clocked a stunning 9.90 seconds ahead of Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, who came in second in 10.00 seconds.

The race was Akani Simbine’s first of the season, and as usual, he was just out to shake off the cobwebs as he gears up for the Diamond League Meetings in China.

The South African sprinting sensation is undeniably one of the most consistent sprinters who has managed to show up since he turned professional in 2015, after winning the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, with a time of 9.97 seconds.

But that can also be said about Usain Bolt, who is one of the greatest sprinters in the world, holding the world records in the 100m and 200m.

However, in recent days, many of Usain Bolt’s records have been surpassed, with the rise of Gout Gout and now Akani Simbine.

Clocking sub-10 in Botswana marked the 11th straight year for Akani Simbine—go ahead and call him Mr. Consistency. Akani Simbine began his record-breaking performance in 2015 and little did he know, people were watching.

He has consistently clocked under 10 seconds in most of his races since then, with 2025 marking his 11th year. He had earlier tied with Usain Bolt, who now remains in 10th place.

Asafa Powell, the sub-10 king, could only afford nine sub-10 performances consistently, since in some years he had injuries and could not run fast. However, generally, he holds the most sub-10 performances, having clocked under 10 seconds 97 times.

Maurice Green managed that for eight consecutive years, with Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin coming in fifth and sixth with seven years of consistency.

Having surpassed one of Usain Bolt’s milestones, Akani Simbine now shifts focus to silencing rivals at the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen.

The main focus of the season will be the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, where he hopes to finally break into the podium, something he has been chasing since making his debut back in 2013 in Moscow.
