The 2023 London Marathon race organisers have issued their condolences to the family of the late Steve Shanks, 45, who died while travelling home after competing in the event on Sunday, April 23.

The organisers have on Wednesday, April 26 announced of his tragic death in a heartbreaking statement.
"Everyone at London Marathon Events was deeply saddened to hear about the sudden death of Steve Shanks as he traveled home on Sunday, April 23 after taking part in the London Marathon.

Kelvin Kiptum threatened Eluid Kipchoge's marathon World Record with second-fastest time in history at London Marathon.
Steve, who was 45 and lived in Bingham, Nottingham was a very experienced runner who had completed many marathons and finished on Sunday in 2:53:26.
A fundraising page for the Multiple Sclerosis Society has been set up in Steve's memory. The cause of death will be established later through a medical examination. The family has asked for privacy and no further details will be released in accordance with their wishes."
Shanks’ wife Jessica, shared her shock in a post on her Facebook page terming Shanks demise as ‘sudden and out of the blue.’
"It’s with great sadness, that I wish to announce the loss of my wonderful husband, Stephen Shanks. His passing was sudden and out of the blue.
He was returning home having spent the day participating in the London Marathon. As you can imagine I’m absolutely in shock and devastated," the post read.
The fundraiser in his honour shared a further tribute to Shanks. It read: "Steve was a keen runner never happier than running anything, from his local Parkrun, to the Bob Graham Round. But he was more than just a runner he was musician, a knitter, and a renowned quizzer possessed of extensive knowledge of terrible pop music.

A record 48,000 runners braved the rain to take on the iconic city route. The event saw Kelvin Kiptum win the elite men's race in 2:01:27, while debutant Sifan Hassan won the elite women's race in 2:18:33.
