Athletics Kenya secured a multi-million sponsorship from betting firm to support events throughout the 2024/25 season.

Athletics Kenya has landed a major financial boost from a local betting firm ahead of the 2024/25 Athletics Kenya weekend meetings and remaining editions of the cross-country series.

The firm has pumped a tune of Ksh 15 million to cover the cost of organising both events and will also cater to the national championships scheduled for next year.

This partnership comes in handy for AK since track and field is one of the most successful events in the country and having financial support is very crucial to making the events a success.

Speaking during the sponsoring ceremony, Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei extended a hand of gratitude to Betika for the kind gesture. He also congratulated Ruth Chepng’etich, the newly-crowned world marathon record holder who was also at the event.

Tuwei went down memory lane on the rich history of athletics in Kenya as he highlighted the importance of athletes always remembering their roots as they look to continue flying the Kenyan flag high.

He revealed that the winners of Athletics Kenya’s weekend meetings will earn Ksh 50,000 while those who win the national championships and other prestigious events will earn Ksh 150,000.

“This is a great thing and we want to congratulate all the athletes who have brought glory to this nation. In future, we should not forget where we have come from. This is the product of the road to Tokyo and we are grateful to our new partner,” Jack Tuwei said.

“We are now talking about new developments and when we talk about that, we need to take care of our athletes. We have already done three cross-countries and this weekend we shall be going to Bomet.”

On his part, Betika Group Chief Executive Officer Mutua Mutava said: “When they go out there they represent us, they are our ambassadors and they always do it because of the passion they have…thank you so much for representing us well. In the Betika Marathons, we have seen people come from there and win in the national and world space.”
