Athletics Kenya (AK) has flagged off the World Athletics initiative for kids and are working closely with the Ministry of Sports on identifying and nurturing young talents at the grassroots.

The main aim of identifying the young talents is to ensure there is continuity in the sport and athletics remains to be one of the greatest sports in the country.

In a post on his Facebook page, AK Nairobi Region chair Barnaba Korir said: “It is our desire at Athletics Kenya to identify and nurture talents from the grassroots in order to maintain our status as an athletics powerhouse in the world.

"In the company of youth sub-committee members, I graced this year's Kids Athletics event that brought together over 500 school children at the Hill School, Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County.”

The program resembles the newly introduced education system- competency-based curriculum which enables children to identify their talents at an early age.

Also present were legendary athletes led by the first woman Olympian Tecla Sang and 3000m world record holder Daniel Komen among others.

Meanwhile, the event has also been celebrated in other countries including Australia and New Zealand and was also staged in China, targeting over 4,000 children at in-person events and 250,000 on social media.

In India, the event was already held and there were two Kids’ Athletics practitioner workshops with over 50 new Kids’ Athletics coaches and teachers educated in the new Kids’ Athletics Programme.

Latvia and USA have also staged the event with the upcoming USA Track and Field and the Bermuda Games set to join forces to put on a Run Jumps Throw Clinic, for kids aged 5-17.

In South America, Athletics Chile is encouraging schools, clubs, and community groups to get involved in Kids’ Athletics Day throughout May by creating a school challenge, club challenge, and community challenge that mimic the terms of the World Athletics member federation challenge.
