Chebet won the women's senior title after clocking 33:48 to cross the finish line.
Reigning supreme at the World Cross-country Championships in Bathurst, Australia earlier this year was one of the most dramatic wins Beatrice Chebet has ever encountered in her athletics career.
Chebet knew she was far from winning the title since Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey was already in a class of her own but unfortunately, her legs gave in and fell a few meters to the finish line.

The Commonwealth Games 5000m champion took advantage and sprinted to the finish line where she cut the tape in 33:48. Speaking on NTV's Sport On, Chebet has come out and disclosed how head coach Julius Kirwa motivated her to go.
“I was confused at first because I didn’t know what happened…at around 500m, she had already opened a huge gap and was racing fast. I decided to just settle for second place because I never thought I could catch up with her.
"At some point, Gidey looked tired and coach Kirwa shouted my name saying, ‘Beatrice, haendi tena.’ He really shouted and that’s when I realised Gidey was tired. Other Kenyans around there were also shouting my name and I decided to push hard,” Chebet disclosed.
Chebet also noted that Gidey was looking a bit uncomfortable and she kept looking behind and that was also motivation for her to push herself.
“She wasn’t looking strong and I also took that to my advantage. I thank God that I won…if there is a race that surprised me, it was the Cross-country. Sometimes I go back to check how I actually ran,” she said.
Chebet noted that she was extremely excited to win the race but she felt bad to see Gidey fall a few meters to the finish line.
