The Commonwealth Games champion was baffled by what she witnessed in Sunday’s Diamond League race.

World 5,000m silver medalist Beatrice Chebet has explained how she was left confused by her good time after recording a personal best to finish second at the London Diamond League on Sunday.

Chebet saved the best for last as she sprinted to the finish line to beat Olympic champion Sifan Hassan to second place behind world champion Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia.

The 23-year-old clocked 14:12.92 behind the Ethiopian who won the race in 14:12.29 while London Marathon winner Hassan settled for third in 14:13.42.

“I'm so happy but very confused, I didn't expect it. 14:12 from 14:34 is an amazing result, my target was to come and run my personal best,” said an ecstatic Chebet.

“I'm happy to be on the podium and but it's even better to have a personal best, I knew it was going to be hard so I'm incredibly happy.

“The crowd was so motivating and encouraging, it made me even happier. My next race will be in Budapest so I have some time to train and prepare ahead of that.”

Hassan had looked on course to winning the race, having taken the lead on the back straight of the final lap, but she ran out of gas in the final 100m when Tsegay overtook her before Chebet also surged ahead.

The race gave fans a sneak preview of what to expect at next month’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary where Chebet, Hassan and Tsegay will square it out in the 5,000m alongside world record holder Faith Kipyegon.

It promises to be a thrilling contest given the great form the athletes are in, meaning preparations for the event will have to be at a higher level.

Chebet has now beaten Hassan for the second time after edging her at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where the Kenyan finished second as the Dutchwoman fizzled out to finish sixth, while Kipyegon has gotten the better of her in 1,500m at the Olympics and Worlds.
