Beatrice Chebet's coach has disclosed how they worked behind the scenes to ensure she had a successful 2024 track season that yielded two Olympics gold medals.

Two-time world cross-country champion Beatrice Chebet has undoubtedly enjoyed one of the greatest seasons in 2024 with her wins from the eve of Christmas to the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels and she is not stopping at that.

However, there are a number of things she owes her success to as per her coach Peter Bii.

In an exclusive interview with Pulse Sports Kenya, Bii explained that Beatrice Chebet defending her cross-country title against a strong field was proof that this season, she was there to prove a point. Key among them was to send a message that last year's win was not a fluke after it was argued that she was lucky because Letesenbet Gidey lost consciousness a few metres to the finish line.

However, as they started the 2024 season, coach Bii told Chebet that the main goal would be to defend her cross-country title and then hopefully proceed to make the Olympic team and win a medal. Chebet did more than that.

“At the start of the season, the most important goal that we had was making the team for the Olympics and then getting a medal. But first, we had intermediate goals, which was the 5km world record in Barcelona and then we went for the World Cross country,” Bii said.

“Defending that title was very important, I think defending the title was a statement from Beatrice because when we were starting we were like last year people were like she won because Gidey stumbled the last 10m and she was just lucky and this year, I told her that we need to work hard and win the sport fair and square and you were meant to be there. That was really the push at the start of the season,” he added.

The tactician noted that starting the season with the 5km world record and winning at the cross-country was much needed to boost Chebet’s confidence.

Beatrice Chebet proceeded to break the 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic, racing in just but her second professional 25-lap race. The Kenyan distance sensation then qualified for the Olympic Games, where she achieved a historic feat.

The world 5,000m bronze medallist became the first Kenyan to claim the 5,000m and 10,000m gold medals. Chebet completed her track season with a dominant win in the women’s 5,000m at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels.

She had intentions of breaking the 5,000m world record this season at the Diamond League Meeting in Zurich but missed narrowly due to the heavy weather conditions.
