Peres Jepchirchir has officially announced her withdrawal from Sunday's New York City Marathon.

Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir will not be on the start line of Sunday’s New York City Marathon due to an injury.

Jepchirchir had earlier disclosed that she sustained a calf pull during her final training session but she was yet to decide on whether to compete or not.

During a pre-race press conference, Jeochirchir said: “I was back from injury…I was strong. The way you saw I ran the Great North Run and the World Half Marathon, and I was looking comfortable.

"I was fit and was really prepared for this year’s race but in bad luck, as I was doing my last training on Saturday, I got a calf pool.

"However, all in all, I’m still happy and on Sunday I will see if I will run if all goes well…I’m not sure though.”

However, the race organisers have finally confirmed that the 2021 New York City Marathon champion will not be competing in the race on Sunday.

In a statement, Jepchirchir explained that after two days of therapy, her management decided that she was not eligible to start the race.

“I sustained a lower-leg injury during the last workout of my marathon training. I travelled to New York with the hopes that it would improve, but after two days of physical therapy, we have made the decision that I should not start the race.

"I still hope to defend my Olympic title in Paris next year and do not want to do anything that might put that in jeopardy. I wish good luck to everybody running on Sunday,” she said.
