Chebet made her debut in the senior national team after finishing second at the World Championships national trials.

As she propelled her team to victory at the World Cross-country championships in Bathurst, Australia early this year, 19-year-old Brenda Chebet knew that it was just the beginning of something beautiful for her 2023 season.

A few months later, Chebet, the reigning World Under-20 1,500m champion, opened her track season at the Kip Keino Classic but did not do well as she fizzled out to finish 10th. She then proceeded to the National Police Championships where she finished second.

After the Police championships, Chebet flew out of the country for the Meeting Stanislas Nancy where she also finished second before coming back to the country for the National Championships.

At the National Championships, she lined up against more than five strong women bidding for a ticket to the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary and luckily, she finished second to successfully make her debut in the senior national team.

But what kept Chebet going despite the Kip Keino Classic setback?

I started off my season with a win in Australia and that’s what has kept me going. Winning the cross-country was not easy and that was just a sign for me that I am capable of anything," she said.

"It’s my first time making it to the national team in the senior category. It has not been easy but I’m glad all the effort has paid off well."

As she heads to Budapest, Chebet will be joined by triple world record holder Faith Kipyegon and training mate Nelly Chepchirchir.

As I go to Budapest, I just want to run my race and see what I will be able to achieve,” she added.

Chebet has competed in two races after the national trials where she did exemplary well in both.

She finished second at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial, a Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix, before winning the 1,500m at the Meeting in Madrid. She heads to Budapest in the form of her life and will definitely be looking to finish in the podium positions.
