Brigid Kosgei unveils ambitious plans as she seeks to don Team Kenya's jersey to Paris 2024 Olympics

Former world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei has her fingers crossed as she seeks to make the final squad for the Paris 2024 Olympics and win the gold medal for Kenya.

Olympic marathon silver medallist Brigid Kosgei has her fingers crossed ahead of the main selection of the women’s marathon squad ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris, France later this year.

Kosgei, the former world marathon record holder over the marathon has promised to burn the midnight oil and train hard and if selected to participate in the event, she will certainly bring home a gold medal.

Athletics Kenya on Thursday, April 4, named a list of six women, from which only three will get the honour of wearing the Kenyan jersey.

The team included defending champion Peres Jepchirchir, former Tokyo Marathon champion Rosemary Wanjiru, Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri, and two-time Chicago Marathon champion Ruth Chepng’etich.

The 2022 New York City Marathon champion Sharon Lokedi was also selected in the mix and she will hope to don the Kenyan jersey for the first time.

“I’m grateful to AK for selecting us to go and represent the country and we promise to work hard in our training in order to bring a gold medal back home.

“I want to encourage everyone to work hard and embrace teamwork so that we can do well and bring back a gold medal.

“If I don’t make the cut to the team, I want to urge all that will get the opportunity to and fight and bring the medals,” Kosgei said during a press briefing.

Meanwhile, AK president Jack Tuwei noted that it is always good to coordinate and consult before making the final decision. The National Olympic Committee of Kenya will now have to cut down the number of athletes to three in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the men’s team comprises defending champion Eliud Kipchoge who will be joined by the 2022 Prague Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso, Tokyo Marathon champion Benson Kipruto, and former Abu Dhabi Marathon champion Timothy Kiplagat. Berlin Marathon runner-up Vincent Kipkemboi has also been selected.
