Kamathi was the last man to win a gold medal for Kenya in the 10,000m and after 10 editions of the World Championships, Kenya is yet to reclaim the title.

The 2001 world 10,000m champion Charles Kamathi has shared that if Kenya is to bring back its lost glory in the long-distance races, then athletes should embrace doing a lot of sprints too.

Kamathi was the last man to win a gold medal for Kenya in the 10,000m at the 2001 World Championships and after 10 editions of the World Championships, Kenya is yet to reclaim the title.

Paul Kipkoech was the first athlete to win a gold medal at the World Championships in 1987 and Moses Tanui retained the title during the 1991 edition.

The rise of strong Ethiopians and Ugandans has seen Kenya falter and the best performance since 2001 was during the 2015 and 2022 editions of the World Championships where Geoffrey Kamworor and Stanley Waithaka finished second respectively.

“The secret at the time was that when you pass the 400m mark above 52 seconds, then you are behind the time and you need to strive harder. At the time we were competing with the likes of Eliud Kipchoge.

Before achieving that, athletes need to do a lot of sprinting so that their legs can get used to it…that’s the major secret to success. I don’t if coaches embrace this but they should start doing so,” he told Nation Sport.

As Team Kenya heads to this year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, all hopes rest on the likes of Valencia Half Marathon champion Kibiwott Kandie and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Daniel Simiu.

Meanwhile, Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei has admitted that Kenya has found it difficult to win a gold medal at the World Championships but they are working around the clock to ensure that things get back on track.

“I know it has been a challenge to get a gold…I can assure you that we are not sleeping. I hope that 10,000m will not be interfered with so that we can continue doing the work and producing good athletes for that event,” he said.
