World 10,000m silver medallist Daniel Simiu has tipped 19-year-old Ishmael Kipkurui for greatness after his scintillating run at the Sirikwa Classic Cross-country that left many dumbfounded.

Reigning World 10,000m silver medallist Daniel Simiu is proud of how youngster Ishmael Kipkurui who is slowly learning the ropes of being a great runner.

Kipkurui, the reigning World Under-20 Cross-country champion, gave Simiu a run for his money at the Sirikwa Classic Cross-country where the 19-year-old stuck onto the World Half Marathon silver medallist up until the finish line.

Simiu was the eventual winner of the race, clocking 29:16 to cross the finish line ahead of Kipkurui who clocked 29:18 for a second-place finish. Weldon Langat completed the podium in the hotly contested race, clocking 29:26 to cross the finish line.

“I didn’t feel threatened by Ishmael and I respect him so much…he is a good athlete. He is young and he is still coming up well.

“He will certainly be the best in the future and I’m praying for him to also work hard and achieve great milestones,” Simiu said concerning the youngster.

Meanwhile, young Kipkurui made headlines last year when he won the junior title at the World Cross-country Championships in Bathurst, Australia and a few days later, he beat a strong field to win the 3000m race at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne.

Kipkurui also made his senior national team debut at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary where he was competing in the 5000m.

Competing in the heats, he finished seventh to secure a slot in the final but things failed to work well for him as he faded to finish 10th in the final of the race.

This year, he opened his season at the 80th Elgoibar Juan Muguerza International Cross country, finishing fourth in the men’s race before proceeding to the Sirikwa Classic Cross-country where he finished second.
