World 10,000m record holder Beatrice Chebet has been feted as the LG/SJAK Sports Personality of May.
Two-time world cross-country champion Beatrice Chebet has won the LG/SJAK Sports Personality of the month of May following her brilliant displays at Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League Meeting in Eugene.
The world 5000m bronze medallist, competing at the event held on May 25, at the Hayward Field, clocked an impressive 28:54.14 much to her credit, to clock a world record over the 25-lap race, and she was just competing at the event for the second time.
In winning the May trophy, Chebet has made a bold promise of going for gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, noting that it is a morale booster for her.

“I want to appreciate the recognition and thank SJAK and LG. We have trials for the Olympics tomorrow, and I will run the 5000m," Chebet said.
"God willing, I want to go and bring a gold medal because, in any global event, I have never won a gold medal. I know anything can happen and everyone is a champion and I want to win easy and clean,” Chebet said.
The indefatigable athlete got her mitts on the coveted sports scribes' award after she beat 11 other strong nominees.

Chebet garnered seven votes against reigning FIA African Rally Champion and current series leader Karan Patel's 4. Gor Mahia striker Benson Omalla and Harambee Starlets player Rebecca "Becky" Okwaro were the other nominees with three votes apiece alongside trailblazing E-Sports star Bilal Mohamed.
Despite not winning the May award, Bilal became the first Esports player to be nominated for the coveted the SJAK award. Bilal won the African Championship after defeating Nigeria’s Chukwudi ‘Looks’Okoli 3-2 in Street Fighter 6 final held in Lagos, Nigeria.
Others nominated were Daniel Mateiko, seasoned footballer John Mark Makwata, Brian Komen, amateur golfer Michael Karanga, Antony Nyamanya, Patrick Thimangu, Austin Odhiambo and Amos Obae who was named the Rugby Super Series player of the tournament.

Rally driver Karan Patel’s impressive show at the FIA African Rally Championship earned him the LG/SJAK Sports Personality of the Month award for November
Others were Triza Atuka and Deborah Jesang who were both feted as the best blocker and outside hitter respectively and were drafted in the African Dream Team during 2024 Confederation of African Women's Volleyball Clubs Championship in, Egypt.
The event also served as the Athletics Kenya Olympic qualifier for the upcoming Paris Summer Games. With her victory, Chebet not only secured her spot on the Kenyan team but also demonstrated her formidable talent in her first 10,000-meter race since 2020.
LG Electronics' Managing Director for East Africa, Dong Won Lee on his part noted that Chebet's performance goes a long way in inspiring the youth with her exceptional talent.
"This award allows us as LG Electronics to strengthen sports cohesion among our sports champions and communities across diverse disciplines. Our commitment is to ensure that the desire dream and vision of our sports personalities do not wither,” Lee said.
