A list of three reasons indicating why many star athletes will prefer other engagements to the Kip Keino Classic.

This year’s Kip Keino Classic will be coming up on Saturday, April 20, at the Nyayo National Stadium and has not received as much hype as the past editions.

The event is a World Athletics Continental Tour fifth edition and as usual, it should always be able to attract some great athletes and should receive much hype since the event is 17 days. However, this year’s edition clashes with the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen, China and certainly, many track & field fans will opt to focus on the Diamond League.

Last year’s edition of the continental showpiece attracted great athletes including World 100m champion Sha’Carri Richardson, five-time World 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (who unfortunately pulled out due to an injury), World High jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala.

With this year’s edition clashing with the Diamond League, many athletes will opt for the Diamond League rather than competing in Kenya. Here is why:

1) Prize money

The Diamond League Meeting series offers a high prize money as compared to the continental event. The Diamond League offers a prize purse of about Ksh 1.3 million for the winner while the Kip Keino Classic will offer about Ksh 800,000 for the winner.

2) Gaining points

Many athletes will opt for the Diamond League for the purpose of gaining points ahead of the Diamond League Meeting final to be held in Brussels. Competing in the Diamond League Meeting final is every athlete’s dream and they would do all it takes to ensure they compete on the global showpiece.

3) Quality fields

Choosing to compete in the Diamond League Meeting means that an athlete gets to compete against very accomplished athletes. The likes of double world record holder Faith Kipyegon and Richardson have already confirmed participation at the event meaning that it would be a thrilling showpiece.

Others like world record holder Mondo Duplantis, world 3000m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, and world champion Winfred Yavi will also be competing at the event.
