Uganda's athletics stars Joshua Cheptegei and Halima Nakaayi return to Eugene, Oregon on Sunday at the Hayward Field for the 2023 Diamond League finals.

Joshua Cheptegei has been confirmed for the non-Olympic 3000m finale, while Halima Nakaayi will take part in the 800m finals.

World Athletics has confirmed $30,000 (Shs110m) for an individual winner, followed by $12,000 (Shs47m) for the runner-up, third place $7,000 (Shs26m), with the prize money spread up to the eighth position.

The overall winner also walks away with the prestigious Diamond League trophy.

Cheptegei, a big event performer, returns to Oregon where he won the 10,000m finals at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

In 2019, Cheptegei became the first Ugandan to win the Diamond League trophy as he obliterated a stellar cast featuring previous winners of the 5000m in the Swiss City of Zurich.

However, at the 2023 Diamond League finals, the two-mile distance will be the longest race in the men's category.

The high-endurance athlete will face familiar top-level competitors, including Norway's Jakob Ingebristsen, Ethiopian quartet Kejelcha Yomif, Bekele Telahun, Barega Selemon, and Aregawi Berihu.

Ingebristsen holds the world-leading time in 3000m, 7:24.00. The two-mile race is not a world record distance, and World Athletics only recognizes a World Best.

In the 800m, Nakaayi will face familiar foes, including Athing Mu, Mary Moraa, Goule-Toppi Natoya, and Hodgkinson Keely.

The other Ugandan in Oregon, Peruth Chemutai, did not finish her 3000m SC finals on August 16 evening.
