The legend lost steam in the final few kilometers ending up 6th.

World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge has broken his silence and narrated what led to the disappointing outing in his debut at the Boston Marathon.

Being a pre-race favourite, all eyes were on Kipchoge but things went south as he faltered with 14km to go. He could only manage a sixth-place finish clocking 2:09:03 to cross the finish line.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Kipchoge revealed that it was bad day in office for him and he congratulated his competitors for pushing hard and taking top honours.

“I live for the moments where I get to challenge the limits. It’s never guaranteed, it’s never easy. Today was a tough day for me. I pushed myself as hard as I could but sometimes, we must accept that today wasn’t the day to push the barrier to a greater height.

I want to congratulate my competitors and thank everyone in Boston and from home for the incredible support I am so humbled to receive. In sports you win and you lose and there is always tomorrow to set a new challenge. Excited for what’s ahead,” the post read.

This was Kipchoge’s third defeat since he started his marathon career in 2013. His first loss was during the 2013 Berlin Marathon where he settled for second place in 2:04:05 behind compatriot Wilson Kipsang who set a new world record time of 2:03:23. The second loss was during the 2020 London Olympics where he settled for eighth place in 2:06:48.

However, the 38-year-old has a lot to celebrate as he is a four-time Berlin and London Marathon champion. He is also the 2014 Chicago Marathon champion and two-time Olympic champion. He is also the 2021 Tokyo Marathon champion.
