Korir had gone to the competition hoping to defend his title despite the injury setback.

Injury-plagued Emmanuel Korir has no doubts he will be ready to defend his title when he heads to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, after a disappointing outing at the ongoing World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Korir had gone to the competition hoping to defend his title despite the injury setback. Unfortunately, he failed to progress to the men’s 800m semi-final after finishing fourth in the Heats.

However, all hope is not lost as he will head back to the drawing board and get ready for next year’s global event where he hopes to make a mark.

“The obvious reason was an injury, I’ve been having injuries since March and I have done my best. I went to Germany and the USA among other countries with the hope of seeking proper medication.

"I’m recovering just ready for the Olympics next year…that’s my focus now,” he said in a post-race interview.

Korir opened his track season at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat where he finished eighth before proceeding to the Meeting in Paris, France, only to finish 10th.

He then competed at the Diamond League Meeting in Stockholm and managed an eighth-place finish. Going to the World Championships, he was not in his best shape but had vowed to work hard to defend his title.

The mantle is now left to former World Under-20 champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Kipng’etich Ngeno to carry Kenya’s flag high since Ferguson Rotich also exited unceremoniously.
