Tamirat Tola destroyed a strong men's field to win the men's race in a commanding fashion.

Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola has obliterated a strong field to clinch top honours at the New York City Marathon.

Tola clocked 2:04:58 to win the race ahead of Albert Korir who clocked 2:06:57 to finish second. Another Ethiopian, Shura Kitata completed the podium after clocking 2:07:11.

More than 10 men were lining up for the men’s elite race at the New York City Marathon with the hope of clinching the top prize.

Passing the 5km mark, Albert Korir was leading the strong men with the Ethiopian duo Jimel Yimer and Yenew Getahun running in second and third place. Another Kenyan, Edward Cheserek was running in fifth place.

As the men passed the 10km mark, American Elkanah Kibet was leading the pack with Koen Naert running in second place. Abdi Nageeye was now running in third place and Korir had now been pushed to fifth place.

Passing the 15km mark, Yimer had now taken charge and Korir was now running in second place. Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola had now climbed to third place. Cheserek was looking very comfortable running in seventh place.

Tola had now taken charge at the 21km mark and he led all the way through to the 25km mark. Tola, Yimer and Korir were now running in first, second and third places respectively passing the 30km mark.

Tola and Yimer were still running in first and second place as they passed the 35km mark. Tola was the first pass the 40km mark and he looked very poised for title contention. Korir followed him closely as Shura Kitata was running in third place.

Tola was the eventual winner of the marathon, clocking 2:04:58 to win the race decisively ahead of Korir who clocked 2:06:57 to finish second. Kitata completed the podium after clocking 2:07:11.
