ATHLETICS Eyes on medals as Athletics Kenya selects formidable team for African Games

Athletics Kenya has selected a formidable team for the African Games after the culmination of a two-day national trials held at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Reigning world 800m champion Mary Moraa, sprint sensation Esther Mbagari, Abel Kipsang, and Kipng’etich Ngeno headline the strong Kenyan contingent to the African Games in Accra, Ghana.

Athletics Kenya selected the formidable team after a two-day national trials held at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Joining Mbagari for the women’s 100m will be Eunice Kadogo, who finished second in the tight race. The men will be represented by Hesborn Ochieng, who cut the tape first and he will be joined by Steve Odhiambo Onyango.

Rukia Nusra will represent the country in the women’s 100mH while in the 110mH men’s race, Wiseman Were will be looking to shine one more time.

In the women’s 200m, Team Kenya’s hopes will rely on Millicent Ndoro while in the men’s 200m, Samuel Chege Waweru and Dan Kiviasi Asamba will don the Kenyan jersey.

The women’s 400m will be headlined by Moraa while the men’s race will be led by Kennedy Kimeu Muthoki who will be joined by David Sanaiyek.

The women’s 400m hurdles will see Vanice Kerubo look to impress after bouncing back from her maternity leave and she will be joined by Rahab Wanjiru. The men’s race will have Kipkrorir Rotich and Nicholas Kiplimo in the mix.

The women’s 800m will be headlined by Vivian Chebet with Lilian Odira joining her. The men’s 800m will be a tight race, having attracted Kipng’etich Ngeno and Aaron Kemei. The women’s 1500m will have Mary Nyaruai Ekiru and Lydia Cheruto Lagat going to fight for a medal.

The men’s 1500m race will have Brian Komen and Abel Kipsang going for top honours in the continental showpiece.

The women’s 3000m Steeplechase will see Caren Chebet and Purity Cherotich team up while the men’s race will see brothers Amos Serem and Edmond Serem team up. They will be joined by Simon Kiprop Koech, the Diamond League final trophy winner.

The women’s 5000m race will be headlined by steeplechase world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech who will be joined by Mary Mananu while the men’s event will have Cornelius Kemboi.

The women’s 10,000m race will have Janet Chepng’etich while the men will see Francis Abong Koumwa and Evans Kiptum compete for top honours.
