World and Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon raced to her third world record performance in less than two months at the Monaco Diamond League.

Kenya's Faith Kipyegon was the star performer at the Monaco Diamond League, running a new World Record (WR) of 4:07.64 to win the women's mile event.

She obliterated Sifan Hassan's previous WR of 4:12.33 from 2019, becoming the first woman in history to go under the 4:10 mark in the women's mile event.

By doing this, Kipyegon completed a historic hat-trick of breaking the WR in three different events at the Wanda Diamond League.

The reigning 1500m world champion had already broken the 1500m and 5000m world records at the Diamond League meetings in Florence and Paris last month, and her mile record was the most emphatic, as she shaved almost a full five seconds off Hassan's previous best.

Her exceptional pace and performance inspired the rest of the field to set records of their own (four Area Records and eight National Records), making it the greatest mile race in history.

Speaking after the race, Kipyegon said her goal this year was just to break the 1500m WR and now has three.

"When I started this season, my goal was to just break the 1500m world record."

Never in athletics history has any athlete broken three World Records in a year. Kipyegon did that in less than two months and may even take down her records further before the season ends.

There are debates about the greatest of all time in every sport. Kipyegon isn't just the greatest but a god born once in a lifetime.
