Ferdinand Omanyala has come out to share about the struggles and backlash he faced at the start of his sprinting career.

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala has opened up on how it was challenging for him to ditch rugby and take up sprints as a career.

He explained that Kenya is not well-known for sprints and at the start of his career, he faced a lot of backlash and he even second-guessed his abilities at some point.

The 27-year-old noted that he was forced to work extra hard to prove to sponsors that he would do well.

“Doing sprints in a country known for middle and long-distance events was a bit of a challenge because nobody believes in your dreams.

You have to carry the dreams for you and make sure that people believe in your dreams and for you to do that, you have to perform and run fast times.

It was a bit of a challenge coming up as a sprinter and there were so many backlashes and challenges and people not believing in you.

Also, trying to get sponsors was difficult since they don’t believe and have never thought that Kenya could have a sprinter,” Omanyala said.

However, he kept pushing forward and burning the midnight oil with the hope to make sure his dreams live on. His hard work has paid off immensely and he has influenced many upcoming sprinters in the country to come out and showcase their talents.

He made a great breakthrough in the 2023 season, becoming the first Kenyan to win a Diamond League Meeting, a feat he achieved in Monaco.

The Commonwealth Games champion also made it to the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and finished seventh in the men’s 100m race.
