Ferdinand Omanyala was slapped with a 14-month ban in 2017 and he has shared one of the most valuable lessons he learnt from the ordeal

Commonwealth Games 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala has shared some of the key lessons he learnt during his suspension back in 2017 for an Anti-doping Rule Violation.

Omanyala was banned for 14 months for testing positive for glucocorticoid betamethasone, with his coach Duncan Ayiemba, being suspended for two years for ‘administration or attempted administration of betamethasone’.

He disclosed that it was a tough time for him but there were lessons he learnt from the occurrence since he did not do it intentionally.

“I was banned for 14 months but during the period, I was still training because I did not dope intentionally…I took a painkiller and it was later found to have some steroids in it," Omanyala said on Radio 47.

"However, I used to train during that moment and I would go to the stadium in the morning. One thing I learnt is that I need to have a personal doctor who understands all these things.

"For instance, if anything happens to me, I cannot be handled aimlessly,” he added.

Omanyala said since then, in case he is found in an emergency situation, a letter will have to be written to explain why a certain type of drug was administered.

“However, if I encounter any changes in my body or I fall sick, I need to call my doctor and explain my case to him," said Africa's fastest man.

"As a professional athlete, you need to guard your career and cannot consume anything served to you."
