Ferdinand Omanyala has clocked his second-fastest time with Mark Otieno securing his automatic Olympic qualification slot at the Kenyan Olympic trials.
Former national champion Mark Otieno is inching closer to achieving his Olympic dream following his second-place finish at the Kenyan Olympic trials where clocked an impressive 10.12 to cross the finish line behind Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala.
His second-place finish at the event guarantees him an automatic slot at the Paris Olympics and he just needs to hit the qualifying time before the deadline, June 30. Otieno has a chance to compete at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships scheduled for June 21 to 26 in Douala, Cameroon.

The race was won by Omanyala, who clocked a world leading time of 9.79 and his second fastest time in history. Meshack Babu sealed the podium, clocking a stunning 10.20 to cross the finish line.

Otieno expressed his elation to have made a comeback and managed to improve his time and he is looking forward to competing at the continental showpiece where he has plans to hit the qualifying mark.
“The good thing that happened was that I’ve been able to lower my time since the season has been tough but I’m really encouraged because I knew that something good is going to happen. There’s no time but there’s time but I know that God can do something and I’m looking forward to next week,” he said.
Meanwhile, Omanyala has been off to a slow start to his season, and this event marks his second sub-10 performance of the season.
He opened his outdoor season at the Kip Keino Classic with a fifth-place finish, clocking 10.03 to cross the finish line. At the Prefontaine Classic, he finished third, clocking 9.98 to cross the finish line.
