Justin Gatlin has advised Fred Kerley on what he needs to do to improve his transition to acceleration, revealing that it was something Noah Lyles also did to become a great 100m runner.

Retired American sprinter Justin Gatlin has explained the one thing that Fred Kerley needs to do to be a lethal 100m runner next season.

The former Olympic champion revealed that triple world champion Noah Lyles also invested his time in the same technique to become a great 100m runner and eventually win the Olympic title at the Paris Olympic Games.

He revealed that Fred Kerley should invest his time in running the indoor races, explaining that it will greatly help him in his 100m execution, especially when he transitions to acceleration. Having observed Fred Kerley’s 100m races, Justin Gatlin explained that he is a world class 100m sprinter but he has yet to master a few things that always cost him the win.

The two-time Olympic silver medallist disclosed that Noah Lyles starting his season with the indoor races played a huge role in his success at the Paris Olympic Games and his season overall. Noah Lyles claimed a silver medal behind Christian Coleman at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I think Fred would actually benefit from running a couple of 60m races because I think the part of his race where you can watch him throughout the race and know that he is about to win because he did something right within his drive and transition or transition to acceleration and then when he does not hit it right, you know that he is going to falter from transition to acceleration,” Justin Gatlin said in his Ready Set Go podcast.

“For him, it is practically what Noah did, which was, practice from his start, practice on his drive and ambition and acceleration and then drop his time lower. I think that’s what made Noah a good 100m runner this season and for Fred, he knows how to get the job done but if he fixes that little thing from his transition to acceleration, he is going to be that guy in 2025. For him a 60m campaign would be good.”

The last time Fred Kerley competed in an indoor race was in 2018, representing the US at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham where the men’s 4x400m relay team finished second in the final.

Since then, Fred Kerley has not made any attempt in competing indoors but following Justin Gatlin’s advice, he should probably consider changing that in 2025.
