LSU's Godson Brume has gained a significant recognition in his college career, being named the male National Athlete of the Week.

Godson Brume has been named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week for the first time in his college career. The award is given to the best male college athlete in the outgoing week, which serves as motivation for the winning athlete.

Brume won the award based on his outstanding performances at the LSU Alumni Gold last weekend, where he clocked sub-10s for the first time and anchored his school's relay team to a record-breaking time.

The Louisiana State University sophomore stunned the 100m field, blazing to a brilliant time of 9.97s (2.3), defeating world silver medallist Marvin Bracy and other renowned Olympians.

Though his time was wind-aided, it was his first time under the 10 seconds mark and the second-best in the NCAA's this season. He is also the first Nigerian sprinter to run sub-10s this year.

After this, Brume anchored his school's 4x100m relay team to the fastest time in the NCAA, clocking 38.36s - the fourth-fastest in the school's history.

Brume is the first Nigerian athlete to win the National Athlete of the Week award this season, a worthy achievement for the talented speedster, and he is the first LSU athlete named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week since Favour Ofili set a then 200m Collegiate Record last year.

He has been in superb form since the 2023 season started, breaking his Personal Best (PB) at almost every meet. He won a 60m bronze medal at the South Eastern Conference Indoor Championships and almost erased his 100m PB of 10.12s in his first outdoor race of the season with 10.13s.

Brume is an athlete on a mission this year, and with his progress so far, it won't be far-fetched to say a legal 9 seconds is around the corner. Perhaps he will finally achieve it at the South Eastern Conference championships next week.
