Halimah Nakaayi acknowledges the rising competition in the 800m but remains determined to stay competitive and improve her performance.

Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi is not downplaying the tough competition in the 800m this season as she gears up for a tough challenge against the likes of world champion Mary Moraa, Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, Lilian Odira, Tsige Duguma and Co.

The former world champion revealed that many stars are coming up in the 800m and posing a challenge to her dominance but she remains confident in her abilities.

Her first stop was at the World Indoor Championships where she hoped to make the cut in the 800m but her fifth-place finish in the heats automatically locked her out of the semifinal.

Halimah Nakaayi is one of the two Ugandans who were representing the East African nation indoors. The other athlete to accompany Halimah Nakaayi is Tom Dradriga.

“I am working hard to give myself a winning opportunity this weekend, and beyond. The world competition in 800m is pretty stiff now,” Halimah Nakaayi admitted.

“So, right now, other than the fact that I am also trying to inspire the younger athletes, I want to lower my running time, so that I am more competitive.”

Halimah Nakaayi is not downplaying the competition coming from youngsters but she is ready for what is to come.

At last year’s Paris Olympic Games, Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson won the gold medal with Tsige Duguma and Mary Moraa coming in second and third respectively. Nakaayi could not make the final.

“Of course, I am not oblivious to how fast the field is. Girls today are running a time of 1:55.00 in my race,” Halimah Nakaayi said.

“While I may not have run that time in the trials, the finals in Nanjing are a totally different thing. The tactics and state in which the body is, determine a lot. I am ready to give it a real go.”

After her gold-medal-winning run at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, Halimah Nakaayi has struggled to make an impact outdoors.

Her second-best performance was at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade in 2022 where she bagged a bronze medal.
