Sha'Carri Richardson on how coach Dennis Mitchell shaped her into becoming the dominating athlete that she now is nowadays.

Sha’Carri Richardson has revealed the impact Dennis Mitchell has had on her career which has enabled her to go from strength to strength over the last couple of years.

The 24-year-old has flourished under Mitchell's no-nonsense approach, going from a tumultuous period to becoming a global track sensation.

Richardson’s accolades speak volumes: a gold medal in the 100 meters at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, a silver in the same event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and a gold in the women’s 4x100-meter relay at the Games.

Her journey, however, has been as much about mental fortitude as it has been about physical prowess, and Mitchell has been the driving force behind her resurgence.

Mitchell, a decorated sprinter himself with three Olympic medals, including 4x100-meter relay gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, has brought his fiercely competitive edge to his coaching. Known for his ability to rebuild athletes and push them to their limits, Mitchell’s philosophy has been a perfect match for Richardson’s fiery personality.

In a candid interview with Essence, Richardson detailed how Mitchell’s tough love has shaped her career.

“Me and my coach have a very close relationship, but even if we didn’t, I like it rough. Give it to me exactly how you need to,” Richardson said.

“If I’m not at practice pushing myself to my full potential or doing what I’m supposed to be doing, I want my coach to tell me exactly how he feels—raw, no filter—because I’ll give it right back to him the same way.

“At the same time, I know it comes from a genuine place of wanting to bring the best out of me, to the point where he’s willing to go against me to pull out what I need. I do not need no baby talk. Let me know what I need to work on.”

Mitchell’s ability to connect with Richardson stems not only from his own experiences as an athlete but also from his belief in challenging athletes to rise above their own limits.

In an era dominated by Jamaican sprint powerhouses like Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson, Mitchell has proven adept at grooming Richardson into a sprinter capable of standing toe-to-toe with the best in the world.

American sprint legend Michael Johnson also weighed in on the Richardson-Mitchell partnership during season one of Sprint, the Netflix docuseries. Johnson emphasized the importance of a coach who could match Richardson’s strong-willed and unfiltered personality.

“For her personality, she probably needs someone that can match that,” Johnson said. “As a talent, Sha’Carri is ridiculous, but to be able to do it at a championship, it’s about her getting the right training and coach.”

Johnson, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, highlighted Mitchell’s competitive and tough nature, recalling their own fiery introduction as athletes.

“I’ve known Dennis for years as a competitor and friend, and the first time I met him, it was because we got into a fight,” Johnson said with a laugh. “And that’s how Dennis is.”
