'It kills me inside'- British runner on how competing at the dirtiest race in Olympic history forced her to retire
The 2006 Commonwealth Games 1500m champion explained how competing in the dirtiest race in history forced her into early retirement.
Thanks to her support system that kept her grounded, Hellen Obiri went on to win her first Olympic medal, a silver in the women’s 5000m. Since then, the 2022 New York City Marathon champion has always had a story to tell when it comes to the Brazilian capital.
She revealed that after winning her silver, she stayed in Rio for 10 more days to just enjoy herself and celebrate achieving the milestone.
“Wow, Rio is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited. But my best memories come from the Olympic Village and the great camaraderie with the athletes. Also, I remember the crowd cheering for me, shouting: Go Kenya! It was my first time competing in the 5000 meters; I previously raced the 15000 meters,” Hellen Obiri said as per Foot Boom.
“It was wonderful to travel around the world and have the opportunity to experience such an incredible city like Rio. I never imagined I could be on the podium. There were times when I thought about giving up, but the support pushed me forward. I had just had my daughter, which made it really tough for me. But my performance was outstanding. I stayed in Rio for ten days.”
Since then, Hellen Obiri has never missed the Olympic Games as she was also in action at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games where she finished second in the 5000m and fourth in the 10,000m.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Hellen Obiri got the golden chance to represent the country in the marathon and she showcased her resilience by winning the bronze medal. She continues to inspire many young women to go after their goals.
