Justice Robert Wananda ruled that Rotich would be set free on a bond.

Agnes Tirop’s murder prime suspect Ibrahim Rotich has been released on bail by the High Court in Eldoret.

As reported by The Star, Justice Robert Wananda ruled that Rotich would be set free on a bond of Ksh 400,000 with a similar surety or a cash bail of Ksh 500,000 as the hearing of the case begins today, November 15, two years after the murder happened.

Through his lawyer, Ngige Ngugi, Rotich sought to be released on bail pending the hearing of the murder case.

During his previous attempts to be released on bond after the then-presiding Judge, Justice Reuben Nyakundi declined his request on the ground that the suspect’s conduct had given the court doubts over his cooperation in the case.

After being freed, there are conditions that Rotich must comply with including non-interference with witnesses, avoiding visiting Iten town where the murder occurred and he has also been barred from leaving Uasin Gishu county.

Meanwhile, the 41-year-old has been in remand prison since his arrest after news came out that he allegedly killed Tirop on October 13, 2021.

The prosecution had told the court that after the killing Rotich went missing but was arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa, several days after the body of the celebrated runner was discovered in her house.

On her part, the late Tirop was an extremely talented runner who was also a former world record holder of the 10km road race. Tirop was also a World Cross-country champion and a two-time World bronze medallist.

Just like many other talented runners like Hellen Obiri, Tirop was an athlete who triumphed in all surfaces, from the roads, to the track and to the cross-country.
