Reigning World Half Marathon silver medallist Daniel Simiu has given hints that he might miss the World Cross-country Championships in March.

World Half Marathon silver medallist Daniel Simiu is uncertain about competing at the upcoming World Cross-country Championships on Saturday 20 March in Belgrade, Serbia.

The newly-crowned Sirikwa Classic Cross-country champion has competed in two cross-country races so far and he disclosed that the latter might be his last.

He opened his 2024 with the 67° Campaccio-International Cross Country in Italy where he won and then extended his winning streak to the just concluded Sirikwa Classic.

“The Sirikwa Classic was my second and I think it will be my last cross-country this year because I’m not sure if I will compete in the World Cross-country or the national event for the selection of the team.

“However, if everything goes well and I’m called upon, I’m ready to represent my beautiful nation,” the reigning World 10,000m silver medallist said.

Simiu competed at last year’s World Cross-country Championships in Bathurst, Australia where he finished sixth.

The season has plenty of competitions lined up including the African Cross-country Championships in Tunisia, the All-African Games in Ghana, and the Olympic Games in France.

However, Simiu is uncertain about competing in any of the events too, noting that his coach is the one who dictates where he will run. He also emphasised that this being an Olympic year, all efforts will certainly be driven to qualifying for the bonanza.

“I don’t know about what my season holds yet because it’s my coach who knows how my form is and he will decide where I run,” Simiu said.
