It was confirmed that the newly-crowned newly-crowned Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year had left to seek urgent specialised treatment in Milan, Italy.

In a statement released by the organisers, Fraser-Pryce expressed her regret towards failing to compete at the event.

Part of the statement read: “It’s unfortunate that my stay in Kenya was too short… I was really looking forward to competing in Nairobi. I’m disappointed and feel so sorry for my Kenyan fans. I look forward to coming back to Kenya again.”

On his part, the competition director, Barnaba Korir confirmed that the 36-year-old had alerted the organisers that she picked up a knee injury in training on Thursday.

“She raised genuine concern and explained that after aggravating the knee injury, she immediately called her doctor in Milan who could only be available for emergency treatment on Friday, and that’s why we had to get the next available flight to get her to Milan,” Korir explained, as quoted by Nation Sport.

Fraser-Pryce has not raced since last year September and she was looking forward to kickstart her track season at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani.

During last year’s edition of the event, she won the 100m women’s race in a world leading time of 10.67 seconds.
