Reigning women's 100m world champion, Sha'Carri Richardson has shed new light on her infamous wig toss at the 2023 USATF Championships.

Sha'Carri Richardson, the reigning women's 100m world champion, has shared fresh insights into her now-famous wig toss during the 2023 USATF Championships.

The moment, which quickly went viral, saw Richardson dramatically remove her wig before a race, revealing her braided hair underneath.

This bold gesture sparked widespread debate and curiosity, with many speculating about its meaning.

In a recent interview with Essence, Richardson detailed the inspiration and preparation behind the iconic move, emphasizing how her personal style and team’s creativity played a role.

"My thought process going into the big races, especially when it comes to my fashion, my hair, my nails, honestly, I have a great team. It’s almost like they can feel the aura around me when I’m in ‘go mode,’” Richardson explained.

“I don’t start on the day of the race. It’s probably like two or three weeks out. I’m already preparing, and my team just picks up on my energy. I literally let them freestyle, and what they come up with always matches perfectly with what I’m feeling and want to show. So I trust my team.”

Richardson revealed that, unlike her usual approach, the wig toss was carefully planned to send a message.

"That was one of the few times I planned out something fully. I wanted a stunt to do," she said.

She recalled discussing the idea with her hairstylist ahead of time to ensure everyone understood her intent.

"I remember telling my hairstylist, ‘Hey, I’mma do this. I want you all to know so that you don’t think I’m just ripping out my hair.’ It wasn’t random. It was a whole process.”

The preparation involved multiple steps, including getting her hair braided before the wig installation.

Richardson wore the wig in the lead-up to the race, fully committing to the concept of using the gesture as a symbolic act.

"When we got to the race, the whole concept was about shedding the past to embrace the moment," she said.

Richardson went on to win the race with the wig toss since becoming a defining moment in her career, reflecting her bold personality, resilience, and ability to captivate audiences both on and off the track.
