Ugandan long-distance runner and 5,000 and 10,000-metre world record holder Joshua Cheptegei has eulogized marathon guru and Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum.

"I am so heartbroken and shocked to learn of the saddening news of the passing of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana," Cheptegei took to his X (formerly Twitter).

Kiptum and his coach, Rwanda's Gervais Hakizimana, died in a car accident on Sunday night.
"My condolences to both families, friends and all the athletics fans around the globe.
(The) road accident has robbed us of such a great talent."
According to Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commandant Peter Mulinge, the tragedy occurred on the Eldoret-Kaptagat road in Kenya.
