Joshua Cheptegei has reacted to Kelvin Kiptum's Valencia Marathon debut and disclosed whether he will go for the course in his debut on the same course.

Reigning 10,000m world record holder Joshua Cheptegei will be making his 42-kilometer race debut at the Valencia Marathon next month and he has his targets set.

Cheptegei will not be seeking to attack the course record and he has revealed that he will approach the marathon differently. The course record was set by Kelvin Kiptum who clocked the fastest time in a debut to win the race in 2:01:53.

Kiptum has been in the form of his life this season too, winning the London Marathon in the second-fastest time in history and setting a new world record at the Chicago Marathon.

“Kelvin Kiptum ran the fastest debut but I want to approach it in a new dimension. All of us are built differently.

"For me, what is very important is to enjoy the race and see what will happen after 35K. It’s something new for me.

"We saw Sifan Hassan running the London Marathon this year in April and at one point, she stood and stopped for some seconds to stretch.

"It tells you that this is something new and there is no respect for persons…I want to approach this marathon with a lot of respect because it is something that is very new to me,” the reigning World 10,000m champion said as per Citius Mag.

He added that his main goal in the race will be to finish in the podium bracket and he will be glad with the times he posts.

The Ugandan explained that since he is yet to master the art of marathon running, he will not focus mainly on running fast times.

“I’m not actually looking at running fast times because it’s still a new distance for me in training…I want to learn.

"The best for me would be seeing myself on the podium. I don’t know if it’s 2:03 or 2:04 what it would take for me to podium,” he added.
