ATHLETICS: Major setback for Kenya as medal prospect pulls out of World Championships
The World silver medalist was among those carrying the country’s hopes in the 10,000m race but he will not be in Budapest next month due to injury
Headlining the list of athletes with wildcards to the global showpiece is double-world record holder Faith Kipyegon. Kipyegon has been in impeccable form so far this season, breaking two world records, the 1500m and 5000m, in a span of one week. The 29-year-old will be seeking her third successive victory when she heads to Budapest.
However, Kipyegon has also been invited to compete in the 5000m and there, she will have to put in effort to finish in the top-two bracket since she does not have a wild card to the event. In the 12.5 lap-race, she will face off against Diamond League Final Trophy winner Beatrice Chebet who has a wild card in the category.
Dancing queen Mary Moraa has a wild card in the women’s 800m race, thanks to her dominant exploits during the 2022 Diamond League Final in Zurich where she upset a strong field to win the race in 1:57.63.
World and Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Korir also has a wild card. However, the 28-year-old has not been off to a good start this season but he might pull off a surprise at the National Trials. Korir opened his season with an eighth-place finish at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco.
He then went for the Meeting in Paris where he fizzed out to finish 10th before another disappointing eighth-place finish at the recent Diamond League Meeting in Oslo, Norway.
