Kenyan mountain running experts set for season opener in the 2024 Mountain Running World Cup

Kenyan mountain running stars Patrick Kipngeno and Philemon Kiriago will be in action as World Athletics releases start dates for the 2024 Valsir Mountain Running World Cup.

The 2024 Valsir Mountain Running World Cup begins Friday, June 21 at the Broken Arrow in Palisades Tahoe, California having attracted very strong fields of past champions and newbies.

As per World Athletics, the season will open with the Broken Arrow VK, a short uphill gold label race, and continues with the 23km Broken Arrow Skyrace, a long gold label race, on Sunday.

The men’s VK will be very competitive with the 2023 World Cup winner Philemon Kiriago leading the field that includes Darren Thomas who was second last year. Abraham Hernandez Cruz will also be joingin the team with Jim Walmsley, Eli Hemming and Christian Allen.

The men’s Skyrace will see defending champion Eli Hemming face off against a strong field that includes Chad Hall and Meikael Beaudoin-Rousseau. Allen, Patrick Kipngeno and Thomas will also be competing.

The women’s VK will see Anna Gibson returning to defend her title, going up against the 2023 runner-up, Jade Belzberg. Annie Dube and Anna Mae Flynn, who finished fourth and fifth respectively last year will also be in the mix.

The VK on Friday starts on the valley floor and climbs its way up 914m over 4.8km to the summit of Washeshu Peak at 2708m. Despite the changes on the course, runners are still set to experience steep rock slabs, snow, and scree, which is guaranteed to deliver an exciting race.

Meanwhile, the Broken Arrow Skyrace is held on a loop which climbs 1533m over the course of 23km. It will start in the Palisades Tahoe Village and runners will be treated to views of Granite Chief Wilderness and they will also experience Emigrant Pass, KT-22 and, like the VK runners, the ‘stairway to heaven’ ladder to Washeshu Peak.
