Hamish Kerr to face Mutaz Barshim in a highly anticipated high jump clash at the Shanghai/Suzhou Diamond League event.

The Shanghai/Suzhou Diamond League has officially confirmed a highly anticipated high jump showdown between the newly-crowned world indoor champion, New Zealander Hamish Kerr, and the Qatari high jump legend, Mutaz Barshim.

This matchup is poised to become one of the standout events in the athletic calendar, drawing attention from fans worldwide.

Kerr, who has emerged as the 2024 world leader with an impressive leap of 2.36 meters at Glasgow, earning his first global title, is set to test his mettle against Barshim, often regarded as one of the greatest high jumpers of his generation.

The Qatari athlete, a three-time world champion, has been focusing on training for his Olympic defense later this year and has not competed since clinching his third Asian Games title in October 2023, bypassing the championships where Kerr showcased his winning form.

For Barshim, the Shanghai/Suzhou event marks a pivotal moment in his preparation for the Olympics, where he aims to achieve an unprecedented feat by becoming the first male athlete to win two Olympic high jump titles.

His record is unmatched, with more world outdoor titles than any other man, secured in a dominant streak from 2017 to 2022, alongside a bronze at the most recent championships in Budapest.

"I’m happy to be back in China to start my new season. Last year I finished my season in China at the Asian games and it was a fantastic atmosphere and support. I have never been in Suzhou but looking forward to visiting and competing there, and looking forward to a great competition,"Barshim stated.

Kerr, on the other hand, is not only the Oceania record holder but also a rising star in high jump, with an impressive resume including a World Indoor bronze, Commonwealth Games gold, and his first Diamond League victory in Stockholm in 2023.

Facing Barshim represents not just a challenge, but an opportunity to narrow the gap between them, with Barshim having won the Diamond League overall three times and claimed 23 individual event wins.

"I’m looking forward to making my first ever trip to China a successful one. After jumping 2.36 at World Indoors, I know I am in great shape leading into the meeting. I can’t wait to compete against some of the other best jumpers in the world, in front of what will be an amazing crowd," Kerr shared with anticipation.

Their competition is further highlighted by the presence of pole vault world-record-holder Mondo Duplantis, ensuring the high jump duo will be in distinguished company in Suzhou.

This event not only promises a riveting display of high jump prowess but also sets the stage for Kerr to potentially redefine his career against a backdrop of athletic excellence.
