King Charles III and Queen Camilla to inaugurate the Wangari Maathai Marathon, honoring the environmentalist's legacy on Africa Environment Day.

Britain's King Charles and his wife Camilla are set to make a historic four-day visit to Kenya where in a historic gesture they will inaugurate the Wangari Maathai Marathon.

This landmark event is part of the Wangari Maathai Foundation's efforts to commemorate the Nobel Laureate's sterling environmental contributions to the world, 12 years after her passing.

The marathon, scheduled for March 3, 2024, is not only an occasion to honor the late Professor Wangari Maathai but also a global call for environmental awareness and the significant role each individual plays in it.

Wanjira Mathai, Founder and Chair of the Wangari Maathai Foundation and the late Prof. Maathai's daughter, passionately speaks about the marathon's theme - 'The Power of One'. She cites, “that each of us, can be potent agents of change and together, we can be a powerful force”.

This poignant sentiment encapsulates the essence of Wangari Maathai's teachings and is an inspiration to millions across the globe.

As urbanization intensifies, the marathon emphasizes the vital role of green spaces and forests in the formulation of sustainable urban policies.

This concept resonates strongly with the late Professor Maathai’s famous quote: “We are called to assist the earth to heal her wounds and, in the process, heal our own.” This run is an embodiment of that principle, urging the global community to prioritize the environment in every policy decision.

King Charles III's decision to participate in this significant event as one of his first official visits since ascending to the throne demonstrates the monarchy's commitment to environmental causes.

The visit is symbolic in more ways than one, as it also marks the King's first visit to a Commonwealth nation as King, notably the country where Queen Elizabeth II began her historic reign in 1952.

Queen Camilla, accompanying the King, reinforces the commitment of the British Royal family to environmental sustainability.

Their participation is expected to shine an even brighter global spotlight on the marathon and, by extension, on the pressing environmental issues the world faces today.

The Wangari Maathai Marathon is also a celebration of Africa Environment Day, renamed Wangari Maathai Day by the African Union in honor of her unparalleled dedication to environmental conservation.

Beyond being a race, the marathon aims to be an international movement. It seeks to galvanize world leaders, environmentalists, and the global community into action.

With the backing of the British monarchy and the relentless work of the Wangari Maathai Foundation, this marathon promises to be more than just a run - it is a stride towards a greener and more sustainable future.
