World Championships high jump silver medallist Yaroslava Mahuchikh has been off to a good start as she eyes more glory in her season despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The 21-year-old was forced to relocate to Belgium, leaving her family behind, a decision many would find difficult to make.

On top of her achievements at the World Championships, she is also the Olympic bronze medallist.
This was because she had to ensure her professional career in the sport continues. It has however not been plain sailing in balancing between her mental health and her professional career.
Last year, the war highly affected Mahuchikh but it was also the year she achieved her Personal Best of 2.05m and she is now first in the world rankings.
“Last season was very difficult but it gave me a PB. I hope this year I will focus more on competitions as I fight for Ukraine at the moment. A lot of families separated and that was a difficult moment for me. I hope all this will come to an end soon.
"I always say that I’m competing for my country and my people. I want to be a source of good news for them by winning more medals,” she said.
She started off her season with a successful indoor tour that saw her emerge champion in all her seven events. Her first event was at the Oleksiy Demyanyuk Memorial in Ukraine.
Her first outdoor win was at the just-concluded Kip Keino Classic where she jumped 2.00m, a world lead.

She revealed that her family moved back to Ukraine and they keep in touch most of the time. Although, she revealed that she communicates with her family frequently but it’s scary since they inform her about the news happening in the country.
She is forced to be a source of peace to her family as she continues training hard to make her dreams come true at her young age.
“They (family) keep telling me how they hear explosions around our home and I am their only source of hope. I always encourage them to have hope despite the struggles. Nothing much has changed since the war is continuing and more killings are happening each day,” she said.

“I am in good shape this season and I want to improve my jumps as much as possible. I want to win gold at the World Championships and I want to do really high jumps,” she said.
Her next assignment will be at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco scheduled for Friday, June 2 where she will be up against fellow greats including compatriot Iryna Ihorivna Herashchenko and Italian Elena Vallortigara.
