ATHLETICS Kiplangat sets new course record in the Source of The Nile Marathon

The Uganda Prisons athlete overcame eased through to set a new course record of 1 hour, one minute and 28.2 seconds in his debut in the half marathon.

Hosea Kiplangat overcame injury setbacks last year to emerge winner of the 2023 Source of the Nile Half Marathon organised by the Uganda Athletics Federation, held in Jinja on Sunday.

The Uganda Prisons athlete overcame eased through to set a new course record of 1 hour, one minute and 28.2 seconds in his debut in the half marathon.

“This is my first half marathon to participate and I’m happy that was able to win it,” he told Pulse Sports after the race.

The 23-year-old will now shift his focus to the World Half Marathon due this year in October in Riga, Latvia.

His teammate Levi Kiprotich and Ben Somikwo finished second and third to complete a 1-2-3 finish for Prisons.

Doreen Chesang who finished 11th at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst a week ago crossed the line in 1:12:24.0 to scoop the ladies' race 19.6 seconds ahead of Uganda Wildlife Authority teammate Annet Chelangat. UPDF’s Rebecca Cheptegei came third.

The winners took home 2 million shillings courtesy of telecommunications giant MTN. the second and third scooped a million and shs.700,000 respectively.
