Kwemoi made history by becoming the first Ugandan to win the World Athletics Label event, crossing the line after 2 hours, 7 minutes and 14 seconds on his first try.

Ugandan marathoner Andrew Rotich Kwemoi has revealed that his tactic to launch the decisive attack late won him the Milan marathon.

Kwemoi made history by becoming the first Ugandan to win the World Athletics Label event, crossing the line after 2 hours, 7 minutes and 14 seconds on his first try.

Kwemoi stuck with the leading pack of about 18 runners from the onset, crossing the halfway mark after 1:03:51.

However, eight members shed off after about 30km and then to five before the Ugandan took his chances to wheel away for the first spot.

“It was my debut over the marathon distance and I could not ask for a better result on a fast course,” Kwemoi told World Athletics after the win.

He explained: “I felt very good and in the race's final stages, I launched the decisive attack, which enabled me to win against a strong field.”

Kenya’s Timothy Kattam Kipkorir and Rwanda’s John Hakizimana grabbed the other podium places.
