Lachlan Kennedy dominated headlines at the Maurie Plant Meet on March 29, grabbing the limelight after beating Gout Gout but who exactly is he?
Gout Gout has been on the tongues of many for the last 12 months, but he actually isn't Australia's fastest man.
Lachlan Kennedy is currently the nation's quickest over 100m and he just stunned Gout in the 200m final at the Maurie Plant Meet on March 29. This is likely going to kickstart an era of sprint battle in Australia. Gout Gout has been a household name but Kennedy has gone about his business quietly and achieving results.
Pulse Sports has the details on Kennedy's rise.
Who is Lachlan Kennedy? Australia's current fastest man
)
According to wikipedia, Kennedy grew up in Brisbane where he attended St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace throughout his upbringing. He played for Brisbane junior rugby union representative sides and played junior international rugby union for Australia before switching his focus to athletics.
In 2025, he became Australia's short track champion and set a new national record, and won the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships, over 60 metres.
While most Australian's probably think Gout is Australia's quickest sprinter, Kennedy just shades the 17-year-old prodigy.
According to Sporting News, Kennedy, 21, has a 100m PB of 10.03 from the Perth Classic set in early March 2025, narrowly giving him the advantage over Gout, who ran 10.04 at the Queensland Championships, also in March.
Kennedy's 100m PB is the equal-third fastest of an Australian ever with Matt Shirvington, behind Patrick Johnson (9.93) and Rohan Browning (10.01).
While Gout is the Australian 200m record holder with a time of 19.98, Kennedy beat him in the 200m final at the Maurie Plant Meet 2025 with his own PB.
Kennedy ran 20.26 - smashing his previous best time of 20.93 - to just sneak home ahead of Gout, who clocked 20.30.
Despite winning the battle, Kennedy was full of praise for Gout, who he expected to be a superstar in the future.
“I’m absolutely gassed as you can see. I don’t run many 200s so this is a bit of a different distance for me but I’m happy to be here.
“The depth is crazy. We’ve got good runners everywhere you look. Spearheaded by Gout, he is a legend and will do many great things along the way. It’s an absolute privilege to be a part of this group.”
Kennedy and Gout will continue their duel at the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth next month.
As things stand, Australian athletics is set for a bright future with the emergence of Gout Gout and Lachlan Kennedy. But are they capable of lowering Usain Bolt's records in both distances.
