Bernard Koech, 35, has explained how being an alcoholic gained him an outrageous number of enemies.

Reigning Haspa Marathon champion Bernard Koech has come out to narrate how his love for the bottle made him gain an outrageous number of enemies.

In an interview with Nos, Koech narrated that every time he would take alcohol, he would engage in fights with most of his friends and even admitted that he hit his wife at some point.

The 35-year-old explained that he would turn into a different person and he decided to change his ways after realising that he was losing many good people in his life.

He also disclosed that former World Marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge was a very crucial person in his rehabilitation journey.

"I made a lot of enemies during that time. I soon discovered that alcohol and I don't mix well.

"I had drinks and became more and more violent. More and more often I started fighting with friends out of the blue.

"It was only when I hit my wife at home at one point that I realised how destructive I was,” he explained.

Koech also explained how he joined a company of bad influence that ruined him to the core. In what must have been his best years between 2015 and 2020, as a celebrated marathon runner he was always surrounded by, as he calls it, "bad company".

"People who you consider friends, but turn out not to be. People who mislead you and ultimately cause you to throw all your principles overboard.

"Suddenly there was no money left for drinks. When I was sober, I realised that my life was going in the wrong direction. I was suddenly all alone. No one knew what I was doing,” he narrated.
