Moraa coasted to victory in the women's 400m finals, while World 3000m Steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech got one over Olympic champion Peruz Jemutai.

Reigning world 800m champion Mary Moraa, world 3000m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech and Aron Cheminingwa have clinched Kenya's second, third and fourth gold medals at the ongoing African Games respectively.

They have joined Emily Ngii, who had won Kenya's first gold medal at the competition earlier on March 20, 2024.

Moraa clocked in at a time of 50.57 seconds, beating Nigerian Joseph Esther Elo by almost a second before celebrating in her customary dancing mode.

The spirited athlete had previously anchored the 4x400m mixed relay team to a third-place finish on Tuesday, 19th March.

By clinching the title, she has broken a 37 year old jinx to follow in the footsteps of Tecla Chemabwai and Francisca Chepkirui, who won the 1973 and 1987 editions respectively.

The tally for Kenya now stands at 13 medals in athletics at the Africa Games, four gold, four silver and three bronze.

In the 3000m steeplechase, world 3000m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech had enough about herself to beat Ugandan Olympic champion Peruz Jemutai.

Chepkoech ran 9.15.62, a games record and faster than the 9.35.55 seconds Ruth Bosibori ran in Algiers in 2007.

Fellow Kenyans Purity Kirui and Caren Chebet finished sixth and seventh respectively. All three Kenyans and Ugandans then celebrated afterwards and went on a victory lap around the stadium.

In the men’s 800m final, Cheminingwa clinched gold in the race on 1.45.72, finishing just a millisecond above fellow Kenyan compatriot Kipngetich Ng’eno, who finished on 1.45.73. Botswana’s Nkape Tumo finished a distant third.

In the Men’s 20km race, Kenya’s Samwel Gathimba clinched Silver, relinquishing his title at the event  by losing to Ethiopia’s Misgana Wakuma Fekasana by a millisecond.

The Ethiopian finished with a time of 1:28.05, while Gathimba finished at a time of 1:28.06. Algerian Ismail Benhamouda finished a whole three seconds behind at 1:31:12.
