The record is currently held by compatriot Faith Kipyegon, who broke it at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris.

At the tender age of 22, Fridah Ndinda has set her eyes on an ambitious target of smashing the women’s 5000m world record.

The record is currently held by compatriot Faith Kipyegon, who broke it at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris earlier this year and Ndinda already has plans to annihilate it.

The record stands at 14:05.20 while Ndinda’s fastest time over the distance stands at 16:12.30, meaning she has her work cut out before realising her dream.

“My dream is to break the world record, that is 5000m record on the track,” a joyful Ndinda said.

Born in a family of five and raised in Kyangii Village in Mwala, Machakos County, Ndinda knew she would be an athlete after habouring the dream from a young age, but education was important for her more than anything else. But now, her focus is fully switched to athletics.

She attended Kamuya Primary School and completed her education in 2015 then proceeded to Kenswed Secondary School where she completed her education in 2019.

“This is something I used to love since I was young, however, there was no form of support for my talent when I was in Primary School. In High School, I decided to go for it and I strongly believed I could do it,” she said.

At the time she was beginning her career, Ndinda attested that it was not an easy ride for her since there were numerous challenges.

“However, at the moment, my mind is settled and I want to focus on my career. I know I’m going far,” she said.

The fledgling talent currently trains in Tatu City where she has fallen in love with the environment. “The course here is good…there is the downhill, uphill, and flat course,” she said.

Her professional career took off last year and has managed to impress in a number of her competitions with podium finishes. One of her best performances was at last year’s ABSA RYC Durban 10k in South Africa.
