Sharon Cherotich had to wait for six years to clinch her first victory in a race since starting her professional athletics career back in 2018 after high school.

Kapsabet-based long-distance runner Sharon Cherotich has recalled her miraculous win at the Tinderet Barngetuny Memorial Mountain Run that happened on Sunday, January 7.

Cherotich was in awe of the win and disclosed that she had never won any race before. She explained that going into the race, she was hoping for a top-five finish but God had other plans for her, something she does not take for granted.

“The race was like a miracle to me since I have never won any race after starting my career in athletics…I have never even finished among the top three.

"I was hoping to finish either in fourth or fifth place but I thank God for enabling me to win the race,” the 23-year-old said.

She added that the race was not a walk in the pack but she was determined to reign supreme. She added that the hills were very challenging and she fought so hard not to be defeated by her opponents.

“The hills were a challenge but I tried my best and no one was able to beat me. I didn’t want to separate myself from my fellow athletes but as I kept going, they seemed to be lagging,” she said.

Cherotich started training back in 2018 after finishing high school and she is the true definition of ‘patience pays’.

She disclosed that she used to compete while in school and she would run in the 10,000m and the 3000m SC where she represented her school up to the regional level.
