Multiple world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has revealed how she is struggling to be a normal mother to her son amid the pressure and spotlight that come with her big name

Multiple world and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce says it is more difficult to raise her six-year-old son Zyon now more than when he was younger.

Fraser-Pryce took a break in 2017 to have her son before triumphantly returning to win the 100m at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, to earn the tag ‘Mommy rocket’.

The five-time world 100m champion would attend various events with her son then but as he has gotten older, it has become more challenging juggling motherhood and her athletics career.

“It was challenging before for me but even more now. He is older, involved in a lot more things, he wants to go kart, in football, he is in grade one and so the work is a lot more intense and I am not able to be there all the time because I am still running,” the 36-year-old told Television Jamaica.

“That is the part that I struggle with because I cannot be there all the time to help with the homework but I do have someone who comes in and helps with the homework and everybody chips in.”

Fraser-Pryce then revealed how she has refused to allow societal pressure dictate how she raises her son given she is always in the public spotlight.

“I think one of the biggest things I have learnt and going through is I cannot allow societal pressure of who I am to help me raise my son,” added Fraser-Pryce.

“My son is Zyon Pryce, I am Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce he is his own individual and he is still a child and I have to raise him without the influence of who I am in the public. That is the part that has been challenging for me because I want my son to go to school and do not give him trouble.”

Fraser-Pryce took maternity break in 2017 and missed that year’s World Championships in London. She went into labour while watching the 100m final and gave birth to Zyon the next day via emergency C-section.

Many thought she would retire but she endured a tough spell in training to regain her shape and form, a time she admitted she doubted herself, before her winning return in Doha.

After failing to make it six world 100m titles by winning bronze at this year’s Worlds in Budapest, Fraser-Pryce has her eyes on the Paris 2024 Olympics where she will be going for her third title.
