Sha'Carri Richardson has opened up about the one thing her coach Dennis Mitchell emphasises on amid criticism.

Being your authentic self is an agenda that many people push including Sha’Carri Richardson and her coach Dennis Mitchell.

The reigning world 100m champion revealed that there has been a lot to learn from her coach and one of the most important things she has embraced is knowing that she can be herself and still deliver and others will be watching.

Sha’Carri Richardson added that there is a lot of criticism that comes from wearing her natural hair, long nails and makeup but over time, she has learnt how to be unbothered because her critics are always watching her moves.

Richardson revealed that watching other black women from other sports has also taught her lessons about embracing her flaws and learning to go about her business despite people always having something to say and admitting that she thrives on that.

“I feel like pushing the envelope continues to show that being your authentic self is all that you need. I feel like my coach always makes sure that we stay grounded in that. Being yourself is all that you need so showing your hair, nails, makeup and your style is all that you need,” Sha’Carri Richardson said in an interview with Blavity TV.

“I feel like even seeing other women that you can feel in other sports you’ll be like, ‘I don’t care about what other people say about my hair, my outfit’ because at the end of the day, you are still going to watch and you are going to respect it and you have no choice.

“I feel like that’s the ultimate thing, like you really have no choice but to look and I feel like that’s what I thrive on, even in my self being able to do that but being able to also pull from other women in their sports.”

This season has seen a softer side of her makeup, long hair and long nails and at the Paris Olympic Games, in particular, she did not go above and beyond to prove her point. However, her nails stood out.

She went on to claim a silver medal in the women’s 100m, finishing second behind Julien Alfred and anchored Team USA to a gold medal in the women’s 4x100m relay.

Richardson now shifts her focus to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan where she intends to defend her 100m title and improve on her 200m bronze medal as she looks to also look fabulous on the track.
